Soft Bounces vs Hard Bounces

When an email is refused by a subscriber’s email server, it’s called a bounce. There are several types of bounces that depend on the cause the email bounced. These details can be located in your campaign report. It’s a great idea to keep a close eye on your bounce numbers to be assured your campaigns are reaching your subscribers.

Soft Bounces

A soft bounce means that the email address was valid and the email message reached the recipient’s mail server. However, there are many reasons an email address may soft bounce, these are some common reasons this could happen.

  • Mailbox is full (over quota).
  • The recipient email server is down or offline.
  • The email message is too large.

At Mail250, we can not attempt to send the message on those subscribers in the same campaign. We will not add that email in suppression. We will try to send on those emails on the next campaign

Hard Bounces

A hard bounce occurs when the message has been permanently rejected. While there are many causes an email address may hard bounce, these are some common reasons this could happen.

  • Recipient email address does not exist.
  • Domain name does not exist.
  • Recipient email server has completely blocked delivery.
At Mail250, we add these hard bounced addresses to a suppression list. What this means is that even if you send a message through us for that user, we will not even try to deliver to that address, because we know it’s no longer good. Continuing to try to send to a known bad address will harm your reputation with the receiver, so we prevent that.
